How to grow NetApp SnapMirrored volumes
The following are my notes on how to grow SnapMirrored LUNs on a MSCS Exchange cluster.
What we're running:
Microsoft Windows 2003 Enterprise 2 node Active / Passive cluster
Microsoft Exchange 2003 SP2
NetApp SnapDrive 3.1
MS iSCSI Initiator 2.01
SnapManager for Exchange 3.1 R1
The Exchange cluster maps the DB and log LUNs over iSCSI to the NetApp filers. SME run backups automagically push the SnapMirrors to a R200 NearStore where they're mounted by Veritas NotBackup via NDMP and dumped to tape. (BTW, some people refer to this product as Veritas NetBackup).
When you want to grow the volumes that host the Exchange logs and DB, you have to resize the destination volumes on the NearStore first. Here's the step by step guide...
On the Nearstore:
1. Quiesce the snapmirror
2. Then break the snapmirror
3. Do vol options
4. Resize the volume
5. Do vol options
On the filer:
6. Increase the volume size (be careful to not oversize it !)
On the Nearstore:
7. Resync the snapmirror, use snapmirror status to monitor the status.
You've now increased the volume size on both the filer and the snapmirrored volumes on the nearstore. In order for the OS to gain access to this additional space, you have to grow the LUNs in SnapDrive. This will result in a brief outage to Exchange.
